Coaching | About

Coaching is vital to the development of sport at both the elite level and in community settings where an increase in participation in sport may be the primary focus. The vision for the coaching document published by Sports Coach UK (2000) stated the key aim for coaching is that:

“By 2012 the practice of coaching in the UK will be elevated to a profession acknowledged as central to the development of sport and the fulfilment of individual potential.”

For those considering a career in coaching, sports development, physical activity or teaching, the minimum experience that employers expect applicants to have, are a number of Level 1 coaching awards, key Sports Coach UK (SCUK) certificates and most importantly 2 years of work related experience.

The University of Glamorgan have carefully designed their coaching foundation degree programmes and coaching modules within the BSc[Hons] Sport Studies to allow students to develop these key employability skills.

This is currently an exciting time to pursue a career in sports coaching, sports development or teaching in the UK. A large number of positions have recently been created, such as School sport officers, Multi-skills coaches and Community coaches, along with many more positions related to sports coaching and development.

Studying at the University of Glamorgan will provide the opportunity to acquire key employability skills currently demanded by the sports industry.

Football Coaching

If you’re interested in football coaching and want to improve your coaching skills, our foundation degree programme in football coaching and performance has been developed to ensure students have the skills, knowledge, techniques and motivation to train players at all levels, from beginners to top professionals.

Rugby Coaching

Our dedicated coaching staff will ensure students are given the opportunities needed to enter into the coaching profession. At Glamorgan we have a foundation degree programme developed in consultation with the Welsh Rugby Union and the Cardiff Blues.

Sport Studies
