Research in this Faculty

Banner for research

  • Will humankind survive climate change?
  • How can you reduce the risks of nurses making drug calculation errors?
  • Who has a 'pea brain’?
  • What do young people think about genetics?
  • What impact does an 'alley gate’ have on a local crime rate?
  • Does 'waste water’ really have to be wasted?
  • Are you sitting comfortably?

These are just a few of the questions researchers are trying to answer through programmes that span the spectrum of disciplines in the Faculty of Health, Sport and Science. Often using new methodological approaches, and tackling some 'cutting edge’ subjects, such as the use of new and sustainable energy sources, the clinical effects of physical extremes, and the care and well-being of those often marginalised in society, our work is united by a common strategy and shared enthusiasm for research.

The Faculty is committed to ensuring that research is placed at the heart of the academic environment; valued in its own right and for the richness it brings to education and professional practice. Applied research, and studies of the implications of research are also important areas, and the Faculty has close links with policy-makers in health, science and education.

We are especially proud of our ratings in the 2008 UK Research Assessment Exercise where many areas were recognised as having international influence with pockets of world leading activity. The faculty encourages new high quality research with groups currently being developed in areas such as Police Sciences, Domestic Violence and Disaster Planning.
